Understanding anxiety and related concerns

Health anxiety: when worry about illness takes over

Repeatedly checking symptoms, searching for explanations or seeking reassurance can take up a great deal of time. Health anxiety is about the impact of the worry—not a reason to dismiss genuine symptoms or avoid medical advice.

Checking, searching and uncertainty

Health anxiety may involve repeatedly examining the body, looking up symptoms, asking others for reassurance or worrying that a medical assessment missed something. Reassurance may bring short-lived relief without resolving the next wave of uncertainty.

Anxiety can produce physical sensations, but that does not establish the cause of any particular symptom. Neither this guide nor a coaching enquiry can rule out illness. New or concerning symptoms belong in a conversation with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Healthcare worries while living in Spain

An unfamiliar healthcare system or explaining symptoms in another language may be part of your concern. You can ask a clinician how communication and follow-up will work and prepare a short description of the symptoms you want assessed. We do not arrange or guarantee English-language medical appointments.

It can help an anxiety-support conversation to distinguish the medical question from the time spent checking, researching and seeking repeated reassurance. Tell us what the worry is stopping you doing; do not send medical records through the public contact form.

Care that does not become endless reassurance

The NHS describes talking therapy such as CBT and, where appropriate, medication prescribed by a doctor among treatment options. A clinician can help consider both genuine healthcare needs and patterns of anxiety-related checking.

Anxiety counselling or psychology should have a clear purpose beyond repeatedly assuring you that nothing is wrong. Ask how the practitioner approaches uncertainty, checking and reassurance-seeking, and how any work fits with medical advice you already receive.

Discussing TRT support in English

TRT is a separate stress and anxiety recovery approach using the Human Stability Framework, guided materials and practical work in everyday life. An enquiry can establish what you want to work on and whether this form of support may fit. It is not a diagnostic appointment or a promise to treat every condition described in this guide.

One-to-one sessions can be arranged via Zoom, FaceTime, or in person at Oliva Nova or nearby. People along the Valencia–Alicante coast can enquire about online support without being athletes or members of a club. Tell us about any existing care so that a different approach is not mistaken for a replacement. Do not stop prescribed treatment on the basis of this page.

Questions, answered

A little more clarity.

Can TRT tell me that my symptoms are harmless?

No. We cannot rule out a medical condition through coaching or an enquiry. Seek appropriate medical assessment for new or concerning symptoms.

Does health anxiety mean I cannot also be physically unwell?

No. Anxiety and physical illness can coexist. A healthcare professional should assess medical concerns rather than dismiss them.

What can I mention in an initial enquiry?

Briefly explain how worry, checking or reassurance-seeking affects daily life, your preferred session format and any existing support. Detailed medical records are not needed.
