Understanding anxiety and related concerns

Specific phobias: support for fear and avoidance in Spain

A particular object or situation can provoke fear that restricts your choices. Phobias can concern flying, needles, animals, heights, enclosed spaces or vomiting, among other things. The effect on your life deserves attention even if others do not share the fear.

A focused fear with a wider impact

Some fears are mainly present around the object or situation; others affect planning long before it is encountered. You might put off a journey, medical appointment or social activity because you anticipate the trigger. Disliking something does not automatically mean a phobia.

Emetophobia is a term used for fear of vomiting. Fears about illness, bodily sensations or contamination can overlap with other difficulties, so careful assessment is more useful than selecting a diagnosis from a list of search results.

Travel and everyday appointments

Flying between Spain and another country, using a lift or attending an appointment involving needles may be relevant to your circumstances. The goal of support should reflect the activities you want or need to do, not pressure to prove that you can tolerate every feared situation.

For an enquiry, describe the trigger, what you avoid and how the fear changes daily life. There is no need to share photographs or detailed accounts that you find distressing. You can start with a written question and ask about an online session.

Choosing help for a specific phobia

The NHS describes talking therapies, including CBT, among treatment options for phobias. A trained professional can discuss a suitable plan and whether other assessment or care is needed. Phobias involving medical procedures should also be discussed with the relevant healthcare team.

Ask how any work involving the feared situation is planned, how consent is handled and what support is available. Do not use this guide to attempt an intense confrontation with a fear on your own. TRT is not advertised as exposure therapy or as a replacement for a clinician's plan.

Discussing TRT support in English

TRT is a separate stress and anxiety recovery approach using the Human Stability Framework, guided materials and practical work in everyday life. An enquiry can establish what you want to work on and whether this form of support may fit. It is not a diagnostic appointment or a promise to treat every condition described in this guide.

One-to-one sessions can be arranged via Zoom, FaceTime, or in person at Oliva Nova or nearby. People along the Valencia–Alicante coast can enquire about online support without being athletes or members of a club. Tell us about any existing care so that a different approach is not mistaken for a replacement. Do not stop prescribed treatment on the basis of this page.

Questions, answered

A little more clarity.

Can I enquire about fear of flying or emetophobia?

Yes. You can describe the fear and its effect on your life. The team will discuss whether TRT support is suitable; an enquiry is not a diagnosis or a guarantee of treatment.

Are agoraphobia and social anxiety the same as a specific phobia?

They are related anxiety topics with different patterns. Separate guides explain fear about escape or help and fear of social judgement.

Will I be asked to face a fear immediately?

The enquiry is a discussion of suitability and available support. Do not assume a particular exercise or treatment plan before agreeing the approach with the practitioner.
